As they say, prevention is always better than a cure. The same applies to electrical switchboards. Regular maintenance is a must. If there is a problem with your switchboard, you risk major appliances in your home being damaged or destroyed in a power surge.

A regular maintenance check on your switchboard will minimise the risk of having a major issue that could end up costing you thousands to replace big items like refrigerators, washing machines, ovens or televisions.

Here’s what’s involved

A licensed electrician will carry out a througher examination of your switchboard and make sure everything is in good working condition. They will perform the following:

  • Internal cleaning to keep dust particles out
  • Inspecting the circuit breakers
  • Checking the insulation
  • Replacing components if necessary
  • Testing safety switches
  • Testing the fastenings
  • Inspecting & replacing control wiring
  • Identifying deterioration

Safety first

One of the key reasons why it’s important to undergo switchboard maintenance is that it ensures your household or business has been protected from the risk of potential electrical fires. Depending on the age of the switchboard, maintenance should be scheduled quarterly, every six months or once every 12 months. Ask your electrician for a recommendation.

Increase the lifespan of your switchboard

Regular maintenance of the switchboard will increase its lifespan, which means fewer costly replacements in the future. Whether it’s a home, commercial or industrial switchboard, don’t take it for granted, make sure it’s regularly maintained.
